		<description>had the exact same problems you described. Xampp seems to work perfectly for more lightweight applications such as wordpress. However, I am also now attempting to get magento installed ontop of the zend core. at least now it looks like magento is providing users with an unified installer. fingers crossed that this works.</description>

Yes, you read that right - after I upgraded my XAMPP to the latest version (1.7.0) after using 1.6.8 for so long, Magento installs crashed Apache. And when I searched for a fix, I found something else instead - I was introduced to Zend Core.
